Kandu Arts is a community-based organisation established in 1998 working on the sustainable development agenda with individuals, groups, organisations, businesses and institutions to explore creative and sustainable solutions to society’s everyday challenges. Our work recognises that the needs of everyone must be met in full consideration of the economic, social and environmental impacts.
Our approach, which uses arts and activities – music, film, visual arts and sport – as a means to explore a wide range of issues, when combined with nurturing strong relationships, is highly effective in areas of engaging the disaffected and increasing community cohesion and development.
Faced with the challenges of lockdown, we adjusted the way we work, continuing to support young people remotely, as well as offering socially distanced activities for a number of young people where necessary.
We developed our open mic night, “Open Mic For Open Minds”, online, sharing a compilation of submissions every Wednesday. Previously a monthly event as The Rivo Lounge in Chippenham, we now share the weekly video on our Facebook page, inviting the young people we work with as well as the wider community to share songs, poetry and art work. This has proved to be a stimulating and inspirational development in the way we work, and will be something that will continue beyond lockdown.
We also successfully went ahead with our film festival online, a four-day event, in partnership with Reel Cinema, which opened with an evening of fantastic films made by students at Wiltshire College.
Over the summer, and as the lockdown eases, we are continuing to offer targeted activities, including film-making, sport and music, in order to maintain important relationships with young people and the community.
