An Exciting Year of Exhibitions Ahead for Chippenham Museum

Chippenham Museum has launched its upcoming exhibition programme, with four free unmissable exhibitions between now and October.

‘Wiltshire on Paper: Post-War Prints from the Bath Academy of Art’ (8 January – 2 April) is a celebration of post-war printmaking from a unique time in Wiltshire’s creative history.

On display in Chippenham for the first time, the exhibition features recent additions to Chippenham Museum’s art collection from the Golder-Thompson Gift. Visitors can enjoy works by nationally recognised artists including Howard Hodgkin, Clifford & Rosemary Ellis and Anish Kapoor. An exhibition catalogue is soon to be available from the museum and online shop, supported by the Arts Society (Kington Langley).

Visit until 7pm at special Museum Lates openings once a month. Thursday evenings: 13 January, 3 February and 3 March.

Councillor James Bradbury, Chair of Chippenham Town Council Amenities, Culture & Leisure Committee, said

“We are extremely proud of our exhibition programme at Chippenham Museum. The museum is free entry, and we encourage everyone to visit and enjoy discovering their local area.”

In April, exhibition ‘The Covid Chronicle’ (9 April – 7 May) captures the collective experience of the pandemic and visits Chippenham Museum with a giant patchwork on its tour of UK. The piece includes work by the local community. This is followed by exhibition ‘Queen & Country’ (14 May – 23 July) coinciding with both the Platinum Jubilee and Chippenham’s Civil War Re-enactment. After which, ‘Robin Tanner: From Goldsmiths to the Great Depression’ (30 July – 8 October) explores the formative years of this celebrated local artist, etcher and teacher.

As the museum welcomes its first visitors to Wiltshire on Paper, Melissa Barnett Head of Heritage & Museum Services, said “Chippenham is incredibly lucky to be the new home of this important art collection, only made possible through the amazingly generous Golder- Thompson Gift in memory of their friend Arthur Norman. We can’t wait to share it!”

Chippenham Museum opened its gallery space in 2018 with funding from Arts Council England. Since then, the museum has staged historic and creative exhibitions featuring loans from national museums alongside the museum’s own collection, work by local artists and objects donated by the community.

Chippenham Museum is a free entry Chippenham Town Council facility. The museum is open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm, for residents and visitors to Chippenham to enjoy.
