At the end of the 18th century, on an isolated island in Brittany, a female painter is obliged to paint a wedding portrait of a young woman.
Starring Noémie Merlant and Adèle Haenel, the film is a beautiful, almost timeless study of power and passion in which observed becomes observer.
Selected for the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 2019, it won the Queer Palm, becoming the first film directed by a woman to win the award, Celine Sciamma also won the award for best screenplay at Cannes.
Portrait of a Lady on Fire was voted the 30th greatest film of all time in the Sight & Sound 2022 critics’ poll.
